Hallullas - Chilean Bread

1/2 cup warm water
1 tsp sugar
1 Tbsp yeast
4 cups flour
1/2 cup warm water (yes more)
1/2 cup warm milk
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 Tbsp shortening
1 egg yolk
1 Tbsp cold water

Mix 1st 1/2 cup water with sugar, sprinkle yeast on top, cover and let sit in warm place until the yeast proofs, about 10 mins.

Place flour in mixing bowl. Mix remaining water, milk & salt, pour into flour, along with the yeast water too. Mix. Add the shortening and continue mixing until smooth and soft.

Roll dough (use cooking spray instead of flour so it does not stick) until it is about 1/2 inch thick. Cut dough to form individual buns. Place on a greased baking sheet. Mix yolk and Tbsp water, paint the buns, and let rise in warm place for about 30 mins.

Bake at 400 F for 20 mins.
